    Positive Self-Talk

    Let’s be truthful, we all talk to ourselves! Occasionally we talk out loud, but most of the time we fix it popular our heads. Self-talk can be helpful (“I can do this” or “All will be okay”) or negative (“I’ll never get better” or “I’m such a fool”). Negative self-talk growths stress. Positive self-talk be able to help you calm down and manage stress. Through practice, you can learn to change bad thoughts into helpful ones. For example:

    From Negative to Positive

    • Instead of saying, “I can’t do this,” say, “I’ll do my best. It’s below my switch.”
    • Instead of saying, “I hate it when this occurs,” say, “I know how to deal with it; I’ve done it before.”
    • Instead of saying, “I feel helpless and alone,” say, “I can ask for help if I need it.”
    • Instead of saying, “I can’t believe I made a mistake,” say, “I’m human, and we all make mistakes. I can fix this.”

    To really make it work, repetition positive self-talk every day. You can do this in the car, at your desk, before bed, or whenever you notice negative thoughts. This is also a great skill to teach children!
