    Hernia Write for Us

Hernia Write for Us: A hernia occurs when part of an internal organ protrudes through an opening or weak spot in the muscle. Most hernias occur when one of the abdominal organs protrudes through one of the abdominal walls. Hernias can develop gradually over time, as we age and muscle wear and tear increases. They can also be the result of an injury, surgery, or a congenital disorder.

Where do hernias most often form?

    A hernia can occur:

    • In the lower chest, through the diaphragm.
    • In the groin, through the lower abdominal wall.
    • Along the anterior midline of the abdomen.
    • Through an incision made during previous abdominal surgery.

    How common are hernias?

Overall, hernias are common, although some types are more common than others. Inguinal hernias occur in about 25% of men. Hiatal hernias occur in about 20% of the U.S. population and in 50% of people over age 50. Congenital hernias occur in about 15% of newborns, mostly umbilical hernias. Incisional hernias account for about 10% of all hernias, and all other types account for another 10%.

    How serious is a hernia?

Most are not serious, but they can be. They can become more serious over time. A hernia becomes serious when it becomes lodged in the opening through which it was squeezed and cannot return to its original position. This can be painful, and in severe cases, the blood supply to the tissue can be cut off, leading to necrosis (tissue death). Because hernias tend to get worse over time, most will eventually require surgery.

    Symptoms and Causes

What are the symptoms of a hernia?

Not all hernias cause symptoms, and different types of hernias can cause different symptoms. One telltale sign of a hernia is a visible lump or bulge that appears with certain activities or positions and disappears at other times. You may also feel pressure, a dull ache, or a tingling sensation as the hernia comes out. It may come out with straining, lifting, laughing, or coughing.

What does a hernia look like?

When you see one, it looks like a bulge where there shouldn’t be one. Some common places are the abdomen or the upper inner thigh. Sometimes it may be visible, but sometimes it isn’t. Some hernias are too deep to be visible from the outside, including femoral hernias and hiatal hernias.

What does a hernia feel like?

You may not feel it at all, or you may feel pressure, dull pain, or sharp pain as the hernia passes through the opening. If you experience frequent discomfort, see a doctor immediately. Hiatal hernias in particular can cause chronic reflux. You may feel this as heartburn or indigestion.
