    Matrescence Support

    Matrescence Support Write For Us: Matrescence is the transition to motherhood or fatherhood that can have long-term benefits for brain function. However, more research is needed to better understand the cognitive changes that may occur.

    The transition to motherhood is influenced by various factors, such as personal experiences, social pressures, and environmental conditions. When a person becomes a mother, their mind and body must adapt to various changes.

    Although not well understood, the brain’s need for adaptation may have potential long-term benefits for the individual, such as improved cognitive abilities as they age.

    What does matrescence mean?

    Anthropologist Dana Raphael coined and defined the term matrescence as the transition to motherhood. She defined it as a stage or phase of development that spans from preconception to postpartum and beyond.

    The constantly evolving process of motherhood is influenced by various factors, including:

    • Personal experiences;
    • Cultural factors;
    • Social factors;
    • Environmental conditions.

    Evidence suggests that the changes and factors that affect a person’s life during matrescence can lead to significant biological changes, particularly in brain development and purpose.

    Researchers are quick to point out that people who fail to become mothers or choose not to do so do not miss out on an essential stage of development. However, they also point out that very little scientific research has examined the overall impact of motherhood on a person’s brain and cognitive abilities.

    How It Affects You

    Researchers suggest that, despite some cognitive and memory impairments associated with early motherhood, motherhood may have an overall protective effect on cognitive function and brain health as people age.

    • In a 2019 study, researchers found evidence that hormonal factors can cause changes in the mother’s brain similar to those seen in adolescents, such as changes in overall brain volume. They also noted that while other variations and processes are well understood, changes in the brain and cognitive function have received less attention.
    • Changes in the brain during the transition to motherhood may facilitate the acquisition of experience-based skills necessary for new mothers.
    • It is possible that the forced changes in complexity associated with early motherhood, which require ongoing cognitive adaptation, lead to the development of cognitive reserve in later life and greater resilience to aging.
    • However, little is known about how motherhood affects thinking, memory, and brain health across the lifespan. Additional research examining the effects of motherhood on cognition, as well as other aspects of human brain function, could help us understand the precise impact of motherhood-related changes on individuals.

    How to Prepare for Motherhood

    The transition to motherhood requires actively adapting to new challenges and demands, which can be challenging and stressful for some mothers. Some of the following tips to ease the transition may be helpful, but they may not work for everyone.

    It’s important to find strategies that work for you. What works for one person may not work for another; try not to stress if a strategy doesn’t work for you.

    Sleep when your baby sleeps

    If possible, take naps or sleep when your baby sleeps. Children often have irregular sleep patterns, which, combined with stress, anxiety, and other stressors, can make it difficult for them to get enough sleep.

    Share Childcare Responsibilities with Your Partner

    Take some time to discuss how to wisely share childcare responsibilities with your partner. Delegating tasks and responsibilities ahead of time can help prevent burnout and stress.Closing your eyes when your baby sleeps can help offset this. Because you and your partner share equal or at least equal responsibility for the child, you may have more time to care for yourselves.
